Venting emotions through music: Martyr, by Betrugerischer

October 25, 2022 • 1 min read
People have always used music as a way to vent emotions. Be it heartbreak, anger, resentment — or even loneliness. "Martyr", by Betrugerischer, deals with that specific feeling. The song, by 16-year-old Sam Garcia, sprung up on him one day. "I was feeling very lonely during the summer and really depressed", he says. "So I had no choice but to write a song about it".  The song's genre — Depressive Suicidal Black Metal — isn't really common in Sam's midst, as a native Venezuelan living in Hong Kong. However, he's felt supported by those with interest in Black Metal. "I love the community, the friends I make, and knowing people who feel like me are listening to my music and feeling better", he states.  The song originated as he stared into his room's ceiling and contemplated. "Everything was falling apart so I stared at my room's ceiling and grabbed my guitar", Betrugerischer says. "I played two notes, then changed it up a bit, and thought to myself 'Wow, this is a really good riff, I should make an entire song related to this!'", and thus Martyr came to be. The band has known each other since Elementary school, and their common liking of Black Metal led them to make music together.  However, Martyr was created by Sam Garcia by himself. Though working together can be an amazing experience, Martyr's one-man-show was important to convey its message: "In Martyr, it was just my pure emotion. The song wouldn't have been as perfect if it weren't for my isolation and pure melancholy", points out Betrugerischer.  As for the recording process, Sam put his drum set in his living room and set his bass on the couch. "I just jammed from 6 pm to 8 am, and then Martyr was born". Apart from expressing his feelings through the music, he tells us how emotional he felt in the production process itself.  "The last riff, I was sobbing while making it. No joke".  Martyr is a great reminder of music's potential not only for music as a way to externalize emotions, but also for listeners to connect with a message on a deeper level. When asked for any words of encouragement to motivate fellow Magroove artists, Sam recommends to try your hardest and never give up on making music.
